Federalising Europe: Our common future as a superpower
The fragmented nature of European nation-states increasingly hampers our ability to respond effectively to global challenges. The time has come for Europe to federalise

In today’s rapidly changing world, it is clear that Europe stands at a crossroads. As global powers like the United States and China continue to assert their influence, the fragmented nature of European nation-states increasingly hampers our ability to respond effectively. In my view, the time has come for Europe to federalise—a move that should become the top priority in our political discourse.
Europe is on the cusp of an extraordinary transformation. In this era, the drive to federalise Europe is not just desirable; it is essential for capitalising on our collective strengths.
Strengthening Our Defence and Security
A united Europe must begin its journey towards federalisation with the integration of our armed forces. By pooling our military resources and capabilities, we can transform Europe into a true superpower. A coordinated defence strategy would not only streamline decision-making but also ensure that we can respond swiftly and decisively to any global threat. Together, our collective might could provide the stability and security that every European deserves.
Economic Powerhouse: Outperforming Global Rivals
Europe already boasts significant economic strength that often goes unnoticed. Consider these striking figures from 2023:
- Car Production:
- European Union: 12 million units
- United States: 10.6 million units
- Steel Production:
- European Union: 126 million tons
- United States: 80.7 million tons
- Export Value (2024):
- EU → US: €502 billion
- US → EU: €344 billion
- Energy Mix – Emission-Free Sources:
- European Union: 68%
- United States: 40%
- Life Expectancy at Birth:
- European Union: 81.5 years
- United States: 78.4 years
- Infant Mortality Rate:
- European Union: 3.3 per 1,000 live births
- United States: 5.6 per 1,000 live births
These numbers illustrate that Europe is not only competitive but often leads in key sectors. Yet, as separate nations, we struggle to fully capitalise on our collective strengths. A federal Europe would allow us to harmonise economic policies, attract more pro-EU capitalists, and invest strategically in industries that will define the future.
Pioneering in Innovation: AI and Renewables
Europe’s forward-thinking initiatives have already set us on a promising path. Ursula von der Leyen’s recent announcement of a €200 billion initiative to bolster Europe’s leadership in artificial intelligence is a testament to our commitment to innovation. With such investments, Europe is poised to become a global leader in the AI race.
Moreover, our strides in renewable energy are commendable. With 68% of our energy now coming from emission-free sources, Europe is well on its way to achieving energy independence and sustainability. Federalisation would further streamline our energy policies, ensuring that innovation and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
Bridging the Political Divide
One of the major challenges facing Europe today is the stark division in political perspectives. On one side, we have pragmatic, pro-business individuals—often found on the right—who understand the importance of building a strong, competitive Europe. On the other, segments of the political left, while staunchly pro-EU, sometimes prioritise extreme climate policies that risk undermining economic growth.
This ideological rift is problematic. A federalised Europe would create a framework that balances economic ambition with environmental responsibility. It is high time we harness the talents and insights of all pro-European forces, regardless of their political leanings, to forge a unified and resilient future.
The Path Forward: A Federal Union
In a world where global challenges are increasingly complex, the idea of small, isolated nations competing with the likes of the US and China is no longer tenable. A federal Europe would not only consolidate our resources but also amplify our voice on the world stage. By adopting a unified approach to defence, economics, and innovation, we can ensure that Europe remains a beacon of progress and prosperity.
So let’s keep Europe great—and make it even greater by embracing federalisation. Our future, our security, and our prosperity depend on it.
